Google has moved individual developers off Gemini CLI and the Gemini Code Assist IDE extensions. The replacement is Google Antigravity, an agentic coding platform with its own CLI, desktop app and IDE extensions.
What happened
Starting June 18, 2026, the Gemini Code Assist IDE extensions and Gemini CLI “stopped serving requests” for consumer accounts. That covers the free individual tier and the Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra tiers (Google).
Not affected: Gemini Code Assist Standard and Enterprise subscribers. They follow a separate schedule.
What replaces it: Antigravity
Google describes Antigravity as delivering “native agentic assistance across purpose-built product surfaces” (Antigravity docs):
Antigravity App: a desktop app for launching and inspecting agent teams, with visual diffs and plans
Antigravity CLI: a “keyboard-first terminal client” for local shells, cloud environments and SSH sessions
IDE extensions: for VS Code, JetBrains, Visual Studio, Zed and Xcode, with inline completions and a side panel
Antigravity SDK: a Python SDK for building your own agents
Even higher limits, more access to the latest Gemini models
Business
From $30/seat/month (Standard/Plus), or pay-as-you-go
App, CLI and IDE extensions with admin controls
Google AI Pro costs $19.99/month and Ultra starts at $99.99/month in the US (checked October 18, 2026; Google).
What to do now
Our take
If you used Gemini CLI with a personal Google account, it won't come back. Move to Antigravity, or to another terminal agent if you liked working in the command line.
Our take
If you used Gemini CLI with a personal Google account, it won't come back. Move to Antigravity, or to another terminal agent if you liked working in the command line.
Stop using “Login with Google” in the old Gemini CLI or Code Assist extension. It no longer works for these tiers.
Install Antigravity: the CLI if you lived in the terminal, or the extension for your IDE.
If you used Gemini CLI, follow Google’s migration guide to Antigravity CLI. It’s linked from the deprecation page.
Android already has a cleanup tool built in. Most people never open it.
