AI coding tools now come in three shapes: AI-first editors, assistants that plug into the editor you already use, and agents that work in your terminal or the cloud. The five below cover all three. We picked tools that working developers use and whose pricing we could verify on the official page.

Cursor: an AI-first editor
What it is: a code editor built around an AI agent, with Plan mode, cloud agents, GitHub pull request review and a CLI. It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux (Cursor docs).
Price: Plus is $8/month, Premium $30/month, Super $100/month, Ultra $200/month. There’s also a free plan (Prices checked on October 18, 2026; cursor.com/pricing).
Worth knowing: since October 12, 2026, Cursor’s new plans are part of xAI’s “The X Subscription.” Plus includes only Grok models. Claude, GPT and Gemini are billed at API list price from prepaid credit, on Premium and up (Cursor docs).
Pay for it if you want an editor where the agent, cloud agents and code review all live together.
What it is: GitHub’s AI assistant. It runs as an extension in VS Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Vim, Neovim and more, and on github.com. It offers code completions, chat, a cloud agent you can assign tasks to, and code review on pull requests (GitHub Copilot).
Price: Pro is $10/month, Pro+ $39/month, Max $100/month. Business is $19 per seat a month and Enterprise $39 per seat a month. The free plan is limited to 2,000 completions and 50 chat requests a month (Prices checked on October 18, 2026; GitHub plans, GitHub docs).
Worth knowing: paid plans include a monthly allowance of AI credits. Extra usage costs $0.01 per credit (GitHub docs). The cloud agent isn’t included in Free.
Pay for it if your team already lives on GitHub and you don’t want to switch editors.
What it is: Anthropic’s coding agent. It reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands and works with git. It runs in the terminal, VS Code, JetBrains IDEs, the Claude desktop app and the browser (Claude Code docs).
Price: included with Claude Pro, which costs $20/month billed monthly or $17/month billed annually. Max starts at $100/month. The free plan doesn’t include it (Prices checked on October 18, 2026; claude.com/pricing).
Worth knowing: Claude Code shares one usage pool with Claude chat. Limits reset every five hours, and paid plans also have weekly limits (claude.com/pricing).
Pay for it if you like handing an agent multi-step tasks, and you also want Claude as your everyday assistant.
What it is: OpenAI’s coding agent. It’s included in ChatGPT plans and runs in the ChatGPT apps, a CLI, an IDE extension and the cloud (Codex pricing).
Price: ChatGPT Plus is $20/month and includes Codex on web, CLI, IDE extension and iOS, plus Codex cloud. Go ($8/month) and Free get limited Codex access in the desktop app. Pro starts at $100/month (Prices checked on October 18, 2026; Codex pricing).
Worth knowing: OpenAI publishes estimated message ranges per five-hour window for Plus, not fixed limits. Pro “currently” has no five-hour limit (Codex pricing).
Pay for it if you already pay for ChatGPT and want a coding agent without another subscription.
What it is: a code editor that works with or without built-in AI. You can bring your own API keys or use external agents like Claude Agent and Codex CLI (Zed pricing).
Price: Personal is free, with unlimited use through your own API keys or external agents. Pro is $10/month and includes unlimited edit predictions and $5 of tokens a month. Usage beyond that is billed at API list price plus 10%. Business is $30 per seat a month (Prices checked on October 18, 2026; zed.dev/pricing).
Worth knowing: Pro has a 14-day free trial with no credit card required (zed.dev/pricing).
Pay for it if you want a lighter editor and prefer to control which models and agents you use.
Want a new editor built around AI: Cursor, or Zed if you’d rather bring your own models.
Want to keep your current editor: GitHub Copilot.
Want an agent for bigger tasks: Claude Code or Codex, depending on which assistant you already pay for.
On a budget: Copilot Pro and Zed Pro are $10/month (Prices checked on October 18, 2026; sources: GitHub, Zed).
Our take
If you already pay $20 for ChatGPT or Claude, try the coding agent you already have (Codex or Claude Code) before buying anything else. Pay for Copilot if you don't want to leave your editor, and for Cursor only if the agent-plus-editor setup is worth its new credit-based pricing to you.
