One is an AI-first editor, the other plugs into the editor you already use. Both changed their pricing in 2026.

The short version

  • Cursor is a full code editor built around an AI agent. On its new plans (since October 12, 2026), Claude, GPT and Gemini models cost extra at API prices.
  • GitHub Copilot runs inside the editor you already use. Since June 1, 2026, chat and agent use is billed in AI credits.

There’s no universal winner. It comes down to whether you want to switch editors.

Pricing: the part that changed

Cursor now sells plans through xAI’s The X Subscription. The included usage pool covers Grok and Cursor’s own models and is shared with Grok. Third-party models are billed separately (Cursor docs). Legacy Cursor plans “keep working as they are.”

Copilot includes completions and Next Edit suggestions without using credits. Chat and agent requests consume AI credits based on tokens, at each model’s API rate, and “fallback experiences will no longer be available” when you run out (GitHub changelog).

What it means: if you mainly want Claude or GPT models, Copilot Pro at $10 includes them up to your credit allowance. In Cursor’s new plans, you pay for them separately, on top of the plan.

Which should you choose?

If you… Pick
Want an editor built around an agent and are happy to switch Cursor
Use JetBrains, Visual Studio, Vim or Xcode and won’t switch GitHub Copilot
Mostly want Claude or GPT models at a predictable price GitHub Copilot
Already pay for X or Grok Cursor (same bill)
Need admin budgets for a team on GitHub GitHub Copilot Business
Want cloud agents and PR review in one product Either: compare the plan that includes both

Pros and cons

Cursor

  • ✓ Agent, Plan mode, cloud agents and Bugbot in one editor
  • ✓ $8 entry plan
  • ✗ Third-party models cost extra on new plans
  • ✗ You have to switch editors

GitHub Copilot

  • ✓ Works in almost any editor
  • ✓ Completions don’t use credits
  • ✗ Agent use can drain credits fast
  • ✗ No fallback model when credits run out

Our take

If you're happy in VS Code or JetBrains, Copilot is the easier choice: nothing to switch. Choose Cursor if you want an editor built around the agent and you're fine with the new credit-based billing for Claude and GPT models.
