Claude has two kinds of limits: usage limits, which cap how much you can use over time, and length limits, which cap how long a single chat can grow. This guide explains both, based on Anthropic’s help center (Anthropic Help).

Usage limits: five hours and one week

  • Session limit: paid plans have a session limit that “resets every five hours.”
  • Weekly limit: a second limit that resets once a week.
  • One pool for everything: claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop all “count towards the same usage limit.”

How much you get depends on your plan. Pro gives “at least 5x more usage per 5-hour session than Free.” Max 5x and Max 20x give 5 and 20 times Pro’s per-session allowance (Claude pricing, Max plan).

What uses up your limit

Anthropic lists these factors:

  • conversation length and complexity
  • the features you use
  • the model you choose
  • the effort level you select
  • tools and connectors, which are “token-intensive”

What happens when you hit it

You can:

  1. wait for the reset,
  2. upgrade, in which case the new plan’s limits apply right away, or
  3. keep working on usage credits, if you’ve turned them on. Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans can buy them.

Length limits: the context window

The context window is Claude’s “working memory” for a single chat. On paid plans it’s 1M, 500K or 200K tokens, depending on the model. Part of it is reserved for Claude’s reply.

When a chat gets close to the limit with code execution on, Claude automatically summarizes earlier messages, and your full history is kept. Long chats like that use more of your usage limit, though.

7 ways to make your limit last

From Anthropic’s own recommendations:

  1. Start a new chat instead of continuing a very long one.
  2. Turn off tools and connectors you don’t need.
  3. Skip web search when you don’t need current information.
  4. Lower the effort level, or turn off extended thinking, for simple tasks.
  5. Use projects, and keep project instructions short.
  6. Remove files you no longer need from projects.
  7. Choose a lighter model for quick questions.

Still hitting limits?

Our take

Most people hit the limit because of a few long chats with tools turned on, not because they use Claude too much. Start fresh chats, turn off connectors you don't need, and use a lighter model for quick questions before you think about upgrading.

If you hit the limit several times a week, compare plans in Claude Pro vs Max. In late September 2026, Anthropic also raised five-hour limits on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans with the Opus 5.5 launch (Anthropic).
