Max doesn't add many features. It adds room. Here's how to tell whether you need it.

How the limits work

Every paid plan has a session limit that “resets every five hours” plus a weekly limit. Usage on claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop “counts towards the same usage limit” (Anthropic Help). What uses more:

  • longer and more complex conversations
  • bigger models and higher effort settings
  • tools and connectors, which Anthropic calls “token-intensive”

When you hit a limit, you can wait, upgrade, or keep going with usage credits if you’ve enabled them.

Who should stay on Pro

  • You use Claude daily but rarely see a limit message
  • You code with Claude Code a few hours a week
  • You’d rather buy occasional usage credits than pay $80 more every month

Who should upgrade to Max 5x

  • You hit Pro’s five-hour limit several times a week
  • Claude Code is part of your daily work
  • You’d use $100 of monthly API credits on your own projects

Who should go to Max 20x

  • Claude is your main tool for most of your working day
  • You run long Claude Code sessions or background tasks every day

Tips before you upgrade

  1. Turn off tools and connectors you don’t need in a chat.
  2. Start new chats instead of very long ones.
  3. Use a lighter model or lower effort for simple tasks.

Our take

Stay on Pro until the limit message becomes part of your week. Max 5x is the sensible next step for daily Claude Code users; Max 20x only makes sense if Claude is your main work tool for most of the day.
