Pixel 6 updates end in October 2026: what owners should do now

Your Pixel 6 won't stop working. But it's about to stop getting security fixes, and that changes how you should use it.

  2. Should you replace it now?
  3. If you upgrade, what to buy

If you still use a Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro, this is the month its update window closes. Google promises these phones 5 years of OS and security updates, counted from when they first went on sale on the US Google Store (Google Pixel Help). The Pixel 6 launched in October 2021, so the window ends in October 2026.

Install the last update first

Before anything else, make sure you have the final patch:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap System, then Software updates, then System update.
  3. Install anything waiting and restart.

Should you replace it now?

Not necessarily this week. But plan for it in the next few months, and sooner if your phone is your main way into your bank, work email or password manager.

Until then, three habits lower the risk:

  • Keep your apps updated. App updates still arrive through Google Play for a while, and they fix app-level bugs.
  • Install apps only from Google Play, and don’t sideload APKs.
  • Turn on Chrome’s Enhanced protection (Settings > Privacy and security > Safe Browsing). It warns you about dangerous and scam sites. Our guide to Chrome’s new scam warnings shows how.

If you upgrade, what to buy

  • Stay on Pixel: the Pixel 11 starts at $899 on the Google Store and gets 7 years of updates, so a phone bought today is covered into 2033 (Google Store). Prices checked on Oct 23, 2026.
  • On a budget: look at an “a” model or a recent Pixel on sale. Before you buy any Android phone, check its update promise; ours is How long will your phone get updates?.
  • Thinking about switching? We compare the iPhone 17, Pixel 11 and Galaxy S26.

When you move, Google’s setup copies most of your data from the old Pixel. Back up your photos first in Google Photos.
