Why is this happening?

Samsung hasn’t said. The reports point to memory prices: chipmakers are putting more of their production into data-center and AI hardware, and that makes the memory inside phones more expensive. That’s a reasonable explanation, but it isn’t confirmed, so treat it as context, not fact.

It also matters beyond Samsung. If memory costs are the cause, other phone makers face the same pressure. Google already raised the Pixel 11’s starting price to $899, and dropped the 128GB model, according to TechCrunch’s coverage of the launch.

Should you still buy a Galaxy S26?

  • Yes, if you find it below list price (carrier or retailer deal) or you get good trade-in credit.
  • Look around, if you’re paying full price. At $999.99, compare it with an iPhone 17 ($899) or a Pixel 11 ($899). Our Software Comparison tool covers apps; for phones, Which iPhone should you buy? is a good start.
  • Wait, if you’re not in a hurry. Holiday sales are close.
