Both come bundled with a $20 assistant plan. The better question is which assistant you'd use anyway.

Claude Code in brief

Claude Code “reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools.” It works with git, connects to tools through MCP, follows project rules in CLAUDE.md, supports hooks and skills, and runs in GitHub Actions or on a schedule (docs). Team and Enterprise organizations also get automatic PR reviews (Code Review).

Codex in brief

Codex comes with ChatGPT. On Plus it works on the web, in the CLI, in the IDE extension and on iOS, and Codex cloud runs tasks in the background. Free and Go users get limited access for quick tasks in the desktop app (OpenAI). With the September 2026 launch, GPT-6 Sol and Luna became available in Codex (OpenAI).

Pros and cons

Claude Code

  • ✓ Runs in the terminal, IDEs, desktop and web
  • ✓ Deep customization: CLAUDE.md, hooks, skills, MCP
  • ✗ No free option
  • ✗ Shares limits with Claude chat

Codex

  • ✓ Limited free access
  • ✓ Comes with the broadest assistant (ChatGPT)
  • ✗ Plus limits are published only as estimates
  • ✗ Full Codex starts on the $20 Plus plan

Our take

Don't pick the agent first. Pick the $20 assistant you'd use every day, and you get its coding agent with it. If you already pay for both, try the same small task in each and keep the one whose changes you have to fix less.
