Does my iPhone get iOS 27? The full list, and what to do if it doesn’t

Good news: Apple didn't drop a single iPhone this year. Here's the list, and how to update without losing anything.

Short answer: if your iPhone runs iOS 26, it can run iOS 27. Apple didn’t remove any models this year (AppleInsider). iOS 27 came out on September 14, 2026, and iOS 27.0.1 followed on September 28 (Apple security releases).

Every iPhone that supports iOS 27

  • iPhone SE (2nd generation and later)
  • iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12 mini, 12, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13 mini, 13, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone 16e, 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max
  • iPhone 17e, 17, iPhone Air, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max
  • The newest models (iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo) come with iOS 27 or later. The Duo ships with iOS 27.1.

Not sure which model you have? Settings > General > About > Model Name.

One catch: some Apple Intelligence features need newer, more powerful iPhones, so an older model can run iOS 27 without getting every feature.

How to update without losing anything

  1. Back up first. Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now, or back up to a computer.
  2. Plug in and use Wi-Fi.
  3. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install iOS 27.
  4. Afterwards, turn on Automatic Updates on the same screen so security fixes install overnight.

Don’t want iOS 27 yet?

You can stay on iOS 26 for now. Apple kept releasing security updates for it alongside iOS 27: iOS 26.7.1 came out on September 28, 2026 (Apple). In Software Update, look for the option to install the latest iOS 26 update instead of upgrading.

That’s fine for a while, but don’t stay behind forever. Over time, the newest fixes go to the newest version first.

If your iPhone is older than an iPhone 11

An iPhone XS, XR or older can’t run iOS 26 or 27. It still works, but it no longer gets the newest security fixes, so:

  • don’t use it for banking or as your main email device;
  • consider a refurbished or cheaper current model. Our Which iPhone should you buy? guide starts at $699.

Our take

This is one of the best years to own an older iPhone: an iPhone 11 from 2019 still gets the newest iOS. Update after a quick backup, turn on automatic updates, and you’re covered.
