How we reviewed this: this review is based on OpenAI’s official pricing pages and help center, checked on the dates shown. We’ll add hands-on testing notes in a future update. We don’t give a score until we’ve tested a tool.

The short version

ChatGPT covers more ground than any other assistant: chat, image creation, voice, deep research, projects, custom GPTs and Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent. Most people will choose between Free, Go ($8) and Plus ($20). Prices checked on October 18, 2026 (OpenAI).

What it can do

From OpenAI’s pricing page (ChatGPT pricing):

  • Chat with OpenAI’s GPT models
  • Projects and custom GPTs for repeat work
  • Image creation, voice and deep research
  • Memory across conversations
  • Scheduled tasks (Plus and up)
  • ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile (Plus and up)
  • Codex, the coding agent, on every plan, with different limits

Plans, prices and models

Plan Price Chat models Codex
Free $0 GPT-5.6 Luna Limited, in the desktop app
Go $8/month GPT-5.6 Luna. “May include ads” Limited, in the desktop app
Plus $20/month GPT-6 Sol (Medium and High effort) Web, CLI, IDE extension, iOS, Codex cloud
Pro From $100/month ($100, $200, $500) GPT-6 Sol (all levels) + GPT-6 Pro (Astra) Currently no five-hour limit
Business $20/user/month annually, $25 monthly GPT-6 Sol (all levels) + GPT-6 Pro Included

Worth knowing:

  • Free and Go have “unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards,” with separate limits on uploads, images and voice.
  • Pro does “not include unlimited use of the GPT-6 Pro model.” There’s a weekly allowance.
  • ChatGPT’s own pricing page didn’t show dollar amounts when we checked. Prices come from OpenAI’s Codex pricing page.

Codex, briefly

On Plus, Codex runs on the web, in a CLI, in an IDE extension and on iOS, plus Codex cloud. OpenAI publishes estimated message ranges per five-hour window, which it says “are not fixed message limits.” See Claude Code vs Codex.

Pros

  • The widest feature set of any AI assistant we cover
  • A real coding agent (Codex) included from the $20 plan
  • A cheap $8 Go tier for light use
  • Image creation and voice built in

Cons

  • Go “may include ads”
  • Model access differs a lot by plan: Plus doesn’t get the top GPT-6 Pro model in chat
  • Pro’s GPT-6 Pro use is capped weekly
  • The pricing page didn’t show prices when we checked

Who it’s for

  • People who want one assistant for writing, research, images and voice
  • Developers who want Codex without paying for a second subscription

Who should skip it

  • Writers who live in long documents may prefer Claude. Compare both in ChatGPT vs Claude.
  • People who already pay for Google One storage may get more from Gemini.

Our verdict

ChatGPT is the safest single subscription if you want one app for everything. Start on Free, move to Go if you hit limits, and pay for Plus when you want Codex or the stronger GPT-6 models.
