The short version
Claude is Anthropic’s AI assistant. You can use it on the web, on desktop (macOS and Windows) and on your phone (iOS and Android). It handles writing, research, files and projects, and paid plans include Claude Code, Anthropic’s coding agent.
Most people will compare two plans: Free and Pro. Pro costs $20 a month billed monthly (Prices checked on October 18, 2026; source). Every plan has usage limits that reset on a five-hour window, and paid plans also have weekly limits.
What Claude can do
These are the features Anthropic documents on its product page (Claude overview). They are not results from our own testing.
Projects
Projects “keep context, instructions, and files organized by project.” You set instructions once and add files, and every chat in that project uses them. The Free plan allows up to 5 projects (Claude pricing).
Artifacts and file creation
Artifacts are shareable designs, slides and documents that you can edit yourself or ask Claude to revise. Claude can also produce editable documents, spreadsheets and slides.
Web search and memory
Claude can search the web for current information. It can also “remember context from past conversations,” so you don’t repeat yourself in every chat.
Connectors
Connectors link Claude to apps you already use. Anthropic’s examples include Slack, Gmail, Google Drive and Salesforce.
Claude in Chrome, Microsoft 365 and voice
Claude in Chrome runs inside your browser. Claude for Microsoft 365 brings Claude into Office apps such as Excel. Voice mode lets you talk to Claude instead of typing.
Models
Anthropic lists several model families: Mythos, Fable, Opus, Sonnet and Haiku (Claude overview). Which ones you can pick depends on your plan.
Claude Code
Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding agent, and it’s included in every paid plan (Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise). Free doesn’t include it (Claude pricing).
According to the docs, Claude Code “reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools” (Claude Code docs). It runs in:
the terminal (macOS, Linux, WSL and Windows)
VS Code and Cursor, through an extension
JetBrains IDEs, through a plugin
the Claude desktop app
the browser at claude.ai/code
It works directly with git (commits, branches, pull requests). It connects to outside tools through MCP. You can give it project instructions with a CLAUDE.md file, and it can run on a schedule or inside GitHub Actions (Claude Code docs).
One thing to know: chat and Claude Code share the same usage. Anthropic says activity “across Claude on web, desktop, mobile, and Claude Code all draws from the same pool” (Claude pricing). Heavy coding days leave less room for chat.

Free
$0
“Covers everyday questions.” Up to 5 projects. No Claude Code.
All plans have limits that reset every five hours. Paid plans also have weekly limits. Anthropic describes Pro and Max in multiples (“5x,” “20x”) rather than message counts, so check the pricing page and help center for current details (Claude pricing).

Creates editable documents, spreadsheets and slides
Connectors for apps like Slack, Gmail and Google Drive
Claude Code is included in every paid plan, from $20/month (Prices checked on October 18, 2026; source)

Cons
Usage limits reset on a five-hour window, and paid plans add weekly caps
Chat and Claude Code share one usage pool
The Free plan doesn’t include Claude Code and caps projects at 5
The pricing page gives a starting price for Max, not a price for each tier
Enterprise adds usage at API rates on top of the seat price
Who it’s for
Writers, researchers and analysts who work with long documents and want projects and memory
Developers who want a chat assistant and a coding agent in one subscription
Small teams that want shared billing and pooled credits (Team plan)
Who should skip it
People who only ask a few quick questions a week. Free may be enough.
Developers who need very high, uninterrupted coding volume on Pro. Look at Max, or at usage-based API billing.
Anyone who needs features Claude doesn’t list on its product page. Check before you pay.
Our verdict
Claude is the assistant we'd point writers and developers to first: long documents, projects and Claude Code all come with Pro at $20. The catch is the usage limit. Everything you do on claude.ai, Claude Code and Desktop shares one pool, so heavy coders feel it fast. Start on Pro and only move to Max if the limit message shows up several times a week.
