The short version

ChatGPT (from OpenAI) and Claude (from Anthropic) are the two AI assistants most people end up choosing between. At the standard paid tier, both cost $20 a month (Prices checked on October 18, 2026; sources: OpenAI, Anthropic). Both include a coding agent: Codex with ChatGPT, Claude Code with Claude.

The right pick depends on what you do all day. This article compares what each company documents. Where quality matters (how the writing reads, how good the code is), we leave room for hands-on testing instead of guessing.

ChatGPT’s own pricing page didn’t show dollar amounts when we checked. The figures above come from OpenAI’s Codex pricing page, which lists the ChatGPT plans. Confirm them at chatgpt.com/pricing before you buy.

For writing

What each one offers

ChatGPT lists projects, custom GPTs, scheduled tasks, image creation, voice, deep research and memory. The amount of each depends on your plan (ChatGPT pricing).

Claude lists projects, artifacts (shareable designs, slides and documents), file creation (documents, spreadsheets and slides), web search, memory, connectors to apps like Gmail and Google Drive, and voice (Claude overview).

The practical difference on paper:

  • Images. ChatGPT lists image creation as a plan feature. Claude’s product page doesn’t list image generation.
  • Reusable assistants. ChatGPT has custom GPTs. Claude uses projects with instructions and files.
  • Files out. Claude lists editable documents, spreadsheets and slides as outputs.
  • Connected apps. Claude lists connectors to tools like Slack, Gmail, Google Drive and Salesforce.

How the writing feels

This is the part no feature list can answer. Tone, how much you edit the draft, and how each one handles your voice are things you have to test.

For coding

Codex (ChatGPT)

OpenAI says Codex is included in ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise. Free and Go get limited access, for “quick” or “lightweight” coding tasks, in the desktop app. Plus adds Codex on the web, in the CLI, in the IDE extension and on iOS, plus Codex cloud (Codex pricing).

On Plus, OpenAI publishes estimated message ranges per five-hour window, which vary by model. It says these “are not fixed message limits.” Pro plans “currently have no five-hour limit” (Codex pricing).

Claude Code (Claude)

Claude Code is included in Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. It isn’t included in Free (Claude pricing). It runs in the terminal, in VS Code and Cursor, in JetBrains IDEs, in the desktop app and in the browser. It works with git, connects to tools through MCP, reads project instructions from CLAUDE.md, and can run in GitHub Actions or on a schedule (Claude Code docs).

Claude’s chat and Claude Code share one usage pool, with limits that reset every five hours and weekly caps on paid plans (Claude pricing).

The practical difference on paper

  • Free coding. ChatGPT’s free plan includes limited Codex. Claude’s free plan doesn’t include Claude Code.
  • Where they run. Both run in the terminal, in an IDE, in a desktop app and in the cloud. Claude Code also lists a JetBrains plugin and Slack. Codex also lists iOS.
  • Limits. Both use five-hour windows on the standard plan. Claude adds weekly limits on paid plans. ChatGPT Pro currently has no five-hour limit for Codex.

How the code turns out

Code quality, how well each agent follows your project’s conventions, and how often you have to fix its work all need a real test on your own repository.

Pros and cons

ChatGPT

Cons

  • The Go plan “may include ads”
  • The pricing page didn’t show dollar amounts when we checked
  • Codex limits on Plus are published only as estimates

Claude

  • Claude Code included from the $20 Pro plan (Prices checked on October 18, 2026; source)
  • Creates editable documents, spreadsheets and slides
  • Connectors to apps like Gmail, Google Drive and Slack
  • Claude Code runs in the terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, desktop and the browser

  • Chat and coding share one usage pool
  • Image generation isn’t listed on the product page

Which one should you pick?

There’s no single winner. Here’s how we’d decide from the documented features:

  • You want one app for everything, including images: start with ChatGPT.
  • You want to try a coding agent without paying: ChatGPT Free includes limited Codex.
  • You live in documents and connected apps: Claude’s projects, file creation and connectors fit that work.
  • You code in a JetBrains IDE: both offer IDE tools. Claude Code lists a JetBrains plugin, so check whether Codex’s IDE extension supports your IDE.
  • You’re on a tight budget: ChatGPT Go at $8 is the cheapest paid option here (Prices checked on October 18, 2026; source).

Our take

Pick by what you do all day. For writing and long documents, we lean Claude: projects and long-context work are where Anthropic puts its effort. For an all-in-one app with images, voice and deep research, ChatGPT covers more ground. For coding, both $20 plans include a capable agent, so choose the assistant you'd use for everything else.

Our pick for writing: Claude, for long documents and projects.

Our pick for coding: a tie. Choose the assistant you'd use anyway; Codex and Claude Code both come with the plan.
